Hiking M’Goun and Sahara Visit

At the plateau de Tarkeddid you enjoy beautiful nature while sipping from your fresh made mint tea. After the trekking there is a “camel safari” in the Sahara with a nice sunset and sunrise and a visit to the old kasbah village of Aït Benhaddou before you return to Marrakech.

  • M’Goun & Aït Bouguemez – from May to October we walk in the eastern High Atlas towards the green valley of the Aït Bouguemez.
  • In this special 11 day trip you make a 7 day walking trek + you visit the Sahara for a ‘camel-safari’.
  • In the green & fruitfull valley of the Aït Bouguemez you start your trek where Berber people live in a remote area. Here we sleep in a Berber-guesthouse ‘chez les habitants’. Just enjoy hospitality by sipping from your fresh made mint tea.
  • Higher in the mountains and at the plateau du Tarkeddit we have to make ‘bivaques’ in the middle of nature.
  • Our local crew will prepare all meals; mules will transport our luggage.
  • Their is a group-tent for dining & cooking.

Good to know

  • The trek starts in the Berber village of Ighf-n-Ighir (1900m).
  • Tents are provided. You just bring your own sleeping bag. And your own matress -‘inflatable’ – if you prefer. Please take into account freezing conditions at the Tarkeddid plateau at 3.200m.!
  • After the trekking we take some time to visit the Sahara for a camel ride and a lovely sunset and sunrise.
  • Before we return in Marrakech we also visit the ancient Kasbah village of the Aït Benhaddou clan.

Day 1Day 1 - Hiking M’Goun and Sahara Visit

Transfer to the eastern High Atlas mountains.

A car or minibus will take us to the eastern High Atlas mountains. On the way we will visit the Ouzoud waterfalls before we continue to the beautiful valley of the people of the Aït Bouguemez; the people of the “valley of the lucky people” – because they live in such a nice, green and fertile area. Here, towards the end of the afternoon, we will reach the mountain village of Ighf-n-Ighir (1.750m) where we stay in a nice Berberguesthouse. Before sunset we can make a short walk to meet the village people taking care for their small cattle. They will harvest some herbs and bring this to their small cows and some sheep.

Day 2Day 2 - Hiking M’Goun and Sahara Visit

Trekking Ighf-n-Ighir (1.750m.) – Azib-n-Ikiss (2.300m.)

Today we will meet our ‘équipe local’ with mules and their drivers for transporting our luggage and camping gear. We start our walking slowly. During the day there is a nice picnic ‘on the road’ to be prepared by our local ‘crew’. We make our ‘bivaque’ near the small shepherd huts of Azib-n-Ikiss.

Day 3Day 3 - Hiking M’Goun and Sahara Visit

Azib-n-Ikiss (2.300m) – Plateau Tarkeddid (2.900m.)

We continue our walk by a nice mule track to reach the coll of Tizi-n-Tarkeddid (3.450m). On top we have a beautiful view to the M’Goun summit and over the colorful valley of Amezri. We walk in a landscape full of Karst and lonely nomad people are living here in summer in their dark brown tents from camelhair.

Day 4Day 4 - Hiking M’Goun and Sahara Visit

Trekking Tarkeddid (2900m) – Irghil M’Goun (4.068m.) – Oulilimt (2.700m.)

Today we go up the holy mountain. We start early in the morning to have best chances for great views. Going down we take another trail to end up further east on the plateau near the sources of the M’goun river.

Day 5Day 5 - Hiking M’Goun and Sahara Visit

Trekking Oulilimt (2.700m) – Tighremt Aït Ahmed (1.900m)

Today we continu our walk between the huge mountains of the eastern High Atlas.

Walking 6 hours.

Day 6Day 6 - Hiking M’Goun and Sahara Visit

Trekking Tighremt Aït Ahmed (1.900m) – Affelafal (…..)

Another day of silent walking between huge mountains. At the end of the day we will reach the shepards village of Affelafal.

Day 7Day 7 - Hiking M’Goun and Sahara Visit

Trekking Affelafal (1.900m) – Tarzout (…..)

Today we walk along with the small M’Goun river stream that is taking us down into the huge Gorges of this – most of the time just – tiny river. We will sleep near the Berbervillage of Tarzout.

Day 8Day 8 - Hiking M’Goun and Sahara Visit

Trekking Tarzout (1.900m) – Bou Thrarar (…..) + transfer to El Kelaâ M’Gouna

Today the last part of our trek that takes us back to the paved road and finally to the luxury of a hotel with a shower.

Walking about 3,5 hours. Transfer ca. 0,45 min.

Day 9Day 9 - Hiking M’Goun and Sahara Visit

Excursion – Gorges de Dadès – Gorge du Todra – Merzouga

Today we profit of being in this beautiful area and we will visit the nearby impressive gorges that the small rivers have caved in these Southern High Atlas Mountains. We will pass by the Gorges de Dadès and the Gorge of du Todra to continue our road to the huge sand dunes of the Sahara. Here will make a camel-safari and sleep in a bivaque des nomades to enjoy sunset and sunrise.

Excursion: whole day.

Day 10Day 10 - Hiking M’Goun and Sahara Visit

Excursion and transfer back to Marrakech

In the early morning we enjoy a desert braakfast and in the evening we will enjoy the spectacle at famous and crowded Jemaa el Fna. How much differences can you handle in one day? And in between we will visit the ancient Kasbah village of Aït Benhaddou were in earlier days the caravans from Tombouctou to Fes passed by. And then we have to cross the High Atlas Mountans by the famous Tizi-n-Tichka pass before we return into the imperial city of Marrakech.

Day 11Day 11 - Hiking M’Goun and Sahara Visit

Marrakech

Free to visit old palaces, museums and the market-‘souks’. Do not forget the nice gardens of Yves St Laurent: Les Jardin Majorelles. You get our Toubkal Adventure suggestions for a nice stroll along the highlights of Marrakech.

And we take care of your last transfer (ca. 20 min.) to the airport.
